Exxon's Filing Points to an Earnings Beat, With Important Offsets

Goldman Sachs reads Exxon's quarterly sensitivity filing as implying about $4.10 of EPS, above consensus but below its own estimate. Refining drives the upside while upstream and chemicals pull back.

ExxonMobil's third-quarter sensitivity filing points to a stronger profit than Wall Street expected, largely because refining margins improved sharply. Goldman Sachs analyst Neil Mehta estimated the update implied earnings of about $4.10 per share, above the FactSet consensus of roughly $3.87 but below Goldman's own $4.33 forecast.

The company's filing shows the mechanism. Better product margins are expected to add a net $4.4 billion compared with the second quarter, led by a $4.5 billion increase in refining and fuels. Stronger specialty-product margins add about $500 million, while chemicals subtract roughly $600 million.

Upstream moves in the opposite direction. Lower oil and liquids prices are expected to reduce earnings by $1.3 billion, partly offset by a $300 million natural-gas benefit. Contract entitlements, sales timing and related items create another estimated $900 million drag in production.

Planned and seasonal factors add smaller adjustments. Exxon expects about $200 million of benefit from lighter scheduled maintenance and $300 million from the quarter's additional days, while outside disruptions reduce earnings by roughly $600 million. The company said it did not see volume losses tied to Middle East events during the quarter.

These are directional estimates, not reported results. Actual earnings will also reflect volumes, trading, taxes and other items that sensitivity tables cannot fully capture. Timing effects in derivatives can make reported profit differ from the underlying operating result and may reverse later.

The shares rose about 2% after the update and had gained roughly 48% for the year, according to the source report. Goldman maintained a Neutral rating and a $169 price target, below the trading price cited that day. That gap shows why an earnings beat may not automatically produce further upside when expectations and valuation have already risen.

Exxon reports on October 30. Investors should compare reported Energy Products earnings with the filing's margin indication, then separate recurring operating profit from timing effects. The filing improves confidence in the quarter, but the stock's next move will depend on whether management sees strong refining margins continuing beyond it.
