NuScale’s 7% Drop Shows How Quickly Nuclear Enthusiasm Can Reverse

NuScale’s 7% Drop Shows How Quickly Nuclear Enthusiasm Can Reverse

NuScale fell more than nuclear peers as investors discounted long-dated reactor revenue. Its certified design remains an advantage, but a binding commercial order is still the missing proof point.

NuScale Power fell 7% to $6.72 in a broad retreat for advanced-nuclear stocks, a larger decline than Oklo’s 6% drop and Centrus Energy’s 4% slide. The Global X Uranium ETF fell about 2% while the broad market was roughly flat, pointing to a sector-specific reset rather than a general risk-off move.

The ranking of those declines is informative. Centrus already earns revenue from uranium enrichment. NuScale and Oklo are still trying to convert licensed technology and development plans into commercial power projects. When enthusiasm cools, the market usually penalizes the companies whose cash flows are furthest away.

NuScale has a genuine regulatory advantage: its small modular reactor design is certified by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. That lowers one barrier, but it does not create a customer contract. UBS’s September downgrade cited long construction timelines, limited firm commitments and expected cash burn, concerns that remain unresolved.

The bull case rests on two potential deployments. ENTRA1 has been discussing a large program with the Tennessee Valley Authority, while the planned RoPower project in Romania would use six NuScale modules. Neither opportunity should be treated as booked reactor revenue until binding agreements and financing are in place.

Centrus’s smaller decline also shows why investors need to separate the nuclear value chain. Fuel suppliers, engineering firms, utilities and reactor developers may share a theme, but their revenue timing and financing needs differ sharply.

NuScale’s next meaningful catalyst is not another industry forecast or power-demand estimate. It is a definitive order that converts certification into contracted economics. Until then, the stock remains highly sensitive to sentiment, funding expectations and every delay in the path to commercial deployment.
