onsemi's AI Power Goal Is Large, but Execution Must Broaden

onsemi expects AI data-center revenue to more than double in 2026 and 2027 and exceed $2.5 billion by 2030. The plan adds a growth engine, but automotive recovery and acquisition execution still matter.

onsemi is asking investors to value it as more than an automotive and industrial chip supplier. At its September investor day, the company said AI data-center revenue should more than double in both 2026 and 2027 and exceed $2.5 billion annually by 2030.

The opportunity sits in the power infrastructure around computing, not in the accelerators themselves. As AI racks consume more electricity, data centers need high-voltage conversion, silicon carbide devices, controllers and other components that move power efficiently from the grid to processors.

That gives onsemi a credible path to participate in AI spending without competing directly with Nvidia. It also means the thesis depends on customers adopting its content across the full power tree and on the company converting design wins into production revenue.

Growth must extend beyond one market

onsemi targets 12% to 14% annual revenue growth from 2026 through 2030 across automotive, industrial and AI data centers. Its second-quarter revenue rose 9% to $1.60 billion, and management called AI data centers the fastest-growing business.

Automotive remains crucial. Higher semiconductor content in electric vehicles, advanced driver-assistance systems and software-defined vehicles can support growth even if unit production is uneven. Industrial demand and energy storage add a third leg, including the adoption of onsemi modules in Sungrow's PowerTitan 3.0 platform.

The Synaptics transaction adds execution risk

onsemi also revised its planned acquisition of Synaptics to a $5.7 billion cash transaction. The strategic goal is to combine power and sensing capabilities with connectivity and processing for physical AI. Paying cash avoids issuing stock at the agreed price, but it increases financing and integration demands.

An analyst's $110 target is an opinion, not evidence that the plan will be achieved. The more useful indicators are AI design-win conversion, automotive content growth, gross margin and the financing terms for Synaptics.

The investor-day targets are ambitious enough to change onsemi's earnings profile if met. They are also far enough out that execution matters more than the headline total addressable market. Investors should reward booked revenue and cash generation, not only long-range opportunity.
