Cloudflare’s AI Demand Is Real, but Its Valuation Leaves No Cushion

Cloudflare’s revenue acceleration and stronger customer retention support its AI infrastructure thesis. The harder question is whether growth can remain near recent levels when the stock already prices in years of execution.

Cloudflare’s second-quarter results finally put numbers behind a story management had been telling for more than a year. Revenue rose 36% to $696.1 million, while dollar-based net retention reached 120%, showing that existing customers were spending more. The company also said its Workers developer platform had become a meaningful revenue contributor as developers used Cloudflare’s network for AI agents and inference workloads.

That matters because the earlier thesis rested largely on leading indicators. Management had described AI as a major use case for Workers before reported revenue growth accelerated. It also spent several quarters rebuilding sales capacity and improving productivity. The latest results suggest those efforts are now appearing in both new customer bookings and expansion among existing customers.

The next test is whether the acceleration lasts. Cloudflare guided for roughly 31% third-quarter revenue growth, below the second quarter’s 36% pace. Management says usage-based contracts make quarterly forecasting less predictable, but investors should still distinguish prudent guidance from a genuine slowdown. The company is scheduled to report third-quarter results after the market closes on October 29, 2026.

Valuation makes that distinction unusually important. Cloudflare remains a high-growth infrastructure company, but it is not yet valued like an ordinary software vendor. A premium multiple can survive modest forecast misses only when customer growth, retention and operating leverage continue to improve together. Revenue growth alone is not enough if costs expand just as quickly.

Cloudflare’s network position gives it a credible role in AI inference, security and developer workloads, yet the company does not disclose Workers revenue separately. Investors therefore cannot isolate how much of the acceleration comes from AI products versus broader platform demand.

The most useful evidence in the next report will be third-quarter revenue, dollar-based net retention, large-customer additions and management’s fourth-quarter outlook. Growth near the guided rate would still be strong, but a return toward 36% with improving margins would provide firmer evidence that AI usage is changing Cloudflare’s earnings power rather than only its narrative.
