AppLovin's Valuation Has Fallen Faster Than Its Growth

AppLovin grew second-quarter revenue 53% and posted a 78% operating margin, yet its shares trade near 20 times trailing earnings. Slowing growth and execution outside gaming explain the discount.

AppLovin's stock has lost more than half its value over the past year even as the advertising platform continued to grow far faster than most peers. That divergence has pushed the shares to roughly 20 times trailing earnings, turning the debate from whether the company is expensive to whether its growth is durable.

The official second-quarter results were strong. Revenue rose 53% to $1.924 billion, net income reached $1.267 billion and income from operations was $1.494 billion. That puts the quarter's GAAP operating margin near 78%, an unusually high level for an advertising technology business.

The source comparison placed AppLovin below Meta and Magnite on trailing P/E while showing faster revenue growth and a wider operating margin. Such comparisons are useful, but they are not perfectly matched. Meta owns large consumer platforms, Magnite focuses on independent ad technology, and The Trade Desk operates a different buying model. AppLovin's concentrated exposure to its own optimization system deserves separate scrutiny.

Growth is already slowing. Year-over-year revenue expansion eased from 68% in the third quarter of 2025 to 53% in the second quarter of 2026. Management guided third-quarter revenue to $2.055 billion to $2.085 billion, which still implies rapid growth but a lower rate than earlier periods.

The next leg depends on advertisers outside mobile gaming. AppLovin opened Ads Manager more broadly and is targeting mid-market customers, but management has acknowledged that awareness among e-commerce advertisers remains limited. Model improvements can increase performance, yet the company must prove those gains travel beyond its strongest vertical.

Investors should also distinguish operating margin from adjusted EBITDA margin and avoid treating one exceptional quarter as permanent. Heavy dependence on algorithmic performance, platform rules and advertiser trust can make growth less predictable than the headline multiple suggests.

The upcoming report will test whether revenue remains inside management's range and whether margins hold as sales and marketing broaden. AppLovin no longer needs to prove that its engine can grow. It needs to prove that the engine can keep producing exceptional returns as its original gaming base becomes a smaller part of the opportunity.
