MARA's Bitcoin Holdings Magnify Both Its Losses and Its Financing Risk

MARA estimates that a $10,000 Bitcoin move changes the value of its holdings by about $350 million. Borrowing secured by Bitcoin makes that sensitivity more consequential.
MARA Holdings fell 17% between October 6 and October 13 as Bitcoin miners sold off. The move was not isolated: CleanSpark, Riot Platforms and Hut 8 also declined sharply. Yet MARA's balance sheet makes changes in Bitcoin especially important.
Management estimated that each $10,000 change in Bitcoin's price creates a non-cash gain or loss of about $350 million on the company's holdings. In the second quarter, MARA recorded roughly $343 million of fair-value losses on digital assets, contributing to a $611 million net loss. Revenue fell to $175 million from $239 million a year earlier as the average Bitcoin price declined.
The exposure is amplified by financing. MARA said it added $600 million of borrowings secured by Bitcoin, leaving 54% of its holdings pledged as collateral at the time of the call cited in the original report. A falling Bitcoin price therefore hurts reported earnings and reduces the value of assets supporting those loans.
MARA has also used its holdings actively. A March 2026 filing said the company sold 15,133 Bitcoin for about $1.1 billion and used proceeds to repurchase roughly $1.0 billion of convertible notes. That transaction reduced debt but confirms that the Bitcoin reserve is also a source of liquidity, not a permanently untouched treasury.
Management wants to diversify into AI infrastructure. Its power portfolio could reach about 4.8 gigawatts after pending transactions, and the company aimed to sign at least two leases by year-end. That strategy could create contract revenue less directly tied to Bitcoin, but leases, approvals and construction must arrive before the diversification is real.
Investors should track three measures together: Bitcoin held and pledged, net debt, and signed AI infrastructure leases. Until contract revenue becomes meaningful, MARA remains a leveraged way to own Bitcoin price exposure with additional execution and financing risk.
