Airbus and Kratos Fly the U740 Valkyrie in Europe, With 2029 Still the Test

Airbus and Kratos completed the U740 Valkyrie's first European flight, advancing a plan to pair a proven airframe with Airbus software for Germany. System integration and procurement remain the decisive hurdles.
Airbus and Kratos completed the first European flight of the U740 Valkyrie, moving their uncrewed combat-aircraft program from preparation into flight testing. The aircraft used a rocket-assisted launch, flew at multiple altitudes and reached speeds of up to Mach 0.8, according to Airbus.
The program combines Kratos' flight-proven Valkyrie platform with Airbus' MARS mission system. MARS is intended to manage sensors, software and mission applications while allowing the aircraft to operate with crewed fighters such as the Eurofighter. Airbus is targeting a sovereign European system that could be operational for the German Air Force by 2029.
For Kratos, the milestone demonstrates that an existing airframe can be adapted for a European customer rather than designed from scratch. That approach can shorten development time and reduce technical risk. It also gives Airbus a platform for its autonomy software without requiring the company to build a new aircraft before testing the mission system.
The flight does not establish combat readiness. Future tests must integrate MARS, demonstrate secure command and control, validate mission performance in contested conditions and satisfy military certification. The companies also need a procurement commitment. A successful demonstration can support an order campaign, but a development target is not the same as a funded production contract.
The investor significance therefore lies in program de-risking, not near-term revenue. Kratos gains another customer pathway for the Valkyrie family, while Airbus strengthens its European uncrewed-aircraft offering. The next material evidence will be integrated mission-system flights, disclosed government milestones and an order with quantity and value. Until those arrive, the 2029 objective remains credible but conditional.
