Lumentum and Coherent Offer Different Ways to Bet on Optical Scarcity

Lumentum's margins and near-term guidance show acute component scarcity, while Coherent offers broader data-center exposure at twice the quarterly revenue. The trade-off is concentration versus diversification, not simply backlog size.
Lumentum and Coherent are both benefiting from the shift toward optical connections inside AI data centers, but their latest results expose different kinds of opportunity and risk. Lumentum shows sharper near-term scarcity and margin leverage. Coherent offers a broader portfolio and roughly twice the quarterly revenue.
Lumentum reported fiscal fourth-quarter revenue of $1.006 billion, up 109.3% from a year earlier, with a 36.6% non-GAAP operating margin. Management guided the following quarter to $1.225 billion to $1.275 billion of revenue and a 39.5% to 40.5% non-GAAP operating margin, evidence that demand is still running ahead of available capacity.
Coherent reported $2.05 billion of quarterly revenue, up 34%, with a 40.2% non-GAAP gross margin. Its Data Center and Communications business supplies transceivers, lasers and photonic components across a wider set of systems. That variety can spread customer and product risk, although it also makes the demand signal less concentrated.
The companies' backlog language should be read carefully. A committed order with firm delivery terms is stronger than a forecast or customer discussion, and neither headline backlog guarantees revenue if deployment schedules move. The source article argues that Lumentum's scarcity is more immediate while Coherent's visibility extends further into 2027. Investors still need cancellation terms, customer concentration and delivery conversion to judge quality.
GAAP comparisons also need care. Lumentum recorded a large accounting loss related to extinguishing debt, so non-GAAP operating margin is more useful for comparing current operations, but it does not erase financing costs or capital needs. Coherent is also spending heavily to expand capacity.
The choice is not between a good backlog and a bad one. Lumentum offers more concentrated operating leverage if scarce components ship on time. Coherent offers scale and breadth if a larger product set keeps converting demand into revenue. Future quarterly guidance, margin delivery and cash conversion will show which advantage proves more durable.
