Mobileye’s New Buy Rating Sets Up an Earnings Reality Check

Mobileye’s New Buy Rating Sets Up an Earnings Reality Check

Citi initiated Mobileye at Buy with an $11 target, while Morgan Stanley cut its target to $9. The split shows why October 29 earnings, shipment trends and design wins matter more than analyst optimism.

Mobileye shares rose after Citi initiated coverage with a Buy rating and an $11 price target, but the same morning Morgan Stanley lowered its target to $9 and kept an Equal Weight rating. That disagreement gives investors a clearer framework than the rally alone: the company’s technology position is respected, while the timing and scale of commercial recovery remain contested.

Citi analyst Michael Ward argued that automakers will keep investing in advanced driver-assistance systems and autonomous-driving technology. Mobileye’s long operating history and broad customer base support that thesis. At a reported share price near $7.75, Citi’s target implied roughly 42% upside.

The target is an estimate, not evidence of improving operations. Morgan Stanley’s reduction from $10 to $9 reflects a more cautious view, even though its target also remained above the market price.

October 29 is the next test

Mobileye confirmed that it will report third-quarter 2026 results before the market opens on October 29. Investors should focus on unit shipments, customer production volumes and design wins rather than the headline earnings reaction.

Design wins matter because they can indicate future program revenue, but the conversion can take years as automakers move from selection to vehicle production. Near-term shipments show whether existing programs are recovering now.

The company’s second-quarter update emphasized efforts to expand robotaxi commercialization through its own service, partners such as MOIA and Holon, and third-party demand platforms. That broadens the opportunity, but it also adds execution requirements beyond Mobileye’s established driver-assistance business.

What would validate the bullish case

A credible upside case needs improving shipments, evidence that new EyeQ programs are reaching production and guidance that supports operating leverage. A weaker outcome would be another quarter in which long-dated autonomy opportunities fail to offset softer current demand.

Mobileye still traded roughly 49% below its reported 52-week high after the premarket gain. That gap shows the market is not simply waiting for another analyst endorsement. It is waiting for financial evidence that the company’s technology leadership is translating into durable growth.
