Meta Fixed a Smart-Glasses Recording Bug but Left Key Questions Open

Some Ray-Ban Meta users reported recordings without the wake phrase, and Meta says the issue is resolved. The company has not disclosed the cause, affected-device count or prevention measures.

Meta says it fixed an issue that caused some Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses to record conversations without the wearer intentionally activating the assistant. User reports said audio and transcripts appeared in the Meta AI app even when the setting that allows responses without the wake phrase was disabled.

The company told Ars Technica that the issue had been resolved and reminded users that they can manage, review and delete voice logs in settings. That response addresses control after a recording exists, but it does not explain why recording began without the expected activation.

Several material facts remain unknown. Meta has not disclosed how many devices were affected, whether a firmware update caused the behavior, how long it persisted or what technical change fixed it. Android Authority reportedly could not reproduce the issue before Meta announced the resolution, so the available evidence establishes user reports and a company fix, not the scope of the incident.

The product's visible recording light is designed to alert people nearby when the camera is operating, and settings allow users to manage voice behavior. Those safeguards are useful only if software follows them consistently. A bug involving unintended capture can weaken trust even without evidence that recordings were misused.

For Meta, the business risk is larger than the cost of one repair. Smart glasses depend on consumers accepting always-available microphones, cameras and cloud processing in ordinary social settings. Unclear consent or surprise recordings can invite regulatory scrutiny and slow adoption.

The next useful disclosure would identify the affected software version, device population, data handling and remediation. A documented root cause would also help users judge whether the fix addressed one trigger or the broader recording pathway. Until then, the responsible conclusion is narrow: Meta says the bug is fixed, but the cause and reach are not public. There is no verified evidence in the available reporting of financial loss or a broader compromise.
