Compare exposure first
Identify the underlying index, asset class, geography and concentration. Funds with similar names can track different universes or apply different weighting and rebalancing rules.
Compare total costs and liquidity
An expense ratio is only part of ownership cost. Spreads, tracking difference, currency conversion and taxes can also matter. Verify current fees and fund terms with the issuer rather than assuming cached figures remain current.
Review portfolio fit
Inspect overlap with existing holdings and check whether a fund uses leverage, derivatives or a daily reset. Historical returns and distribution yields alone do not establish suitability.
