Wells Fargo Profit Beats Estimates as Wealth Revenue Grows 12%

Wells Fargo beats third-quarter profit estimates on wealth management strength

Wells Fargo earned $1.87 a share in the third quarter as wealth-management revenue rose 12%. Profitability improved, but revenue and net interest income missed estimates and the stock fell after the mixed report.

Wells Fargo reported third-quarter earnings of $1.87 a share, two cents above the analyst estimate cited by the source and 13% higher than a year earlier. The bank's profit and returns improved, but revenue and net interest income fell short of expectations, explaining why the shares declined about 1.3% after the release.

Wealth led the growth

Net income increased 6% to $5.95 billion. Wealth and Investment Management produced the strongest segment growth, with revenue rising 12% to $4.1 billion. Commercial Banking revenue increased 6% to $3.24 billion, Consumer Banking and Lending grew 5% to $10.66 billion, and Corporate and Investment Banking rose 3% to $5.01 billion.

Within the corporate and investment bank, investment-banking revenue climbed 10% to $611 million and equities revenue increased 21% to $543 million. Fixed income, currencies and commodities revenue moved the other way, falling 7% to $1.26 billion. The mix shows that Wells benefited from advisory and equities activity but did not escape the weaker bond-trading trend seen across parts of the industry.

The revenue shortfall

Total revenue rose 2% to $21.9 billion, below the $22.3 billion estimate. Net interest income was $12.52 billion versus an expected $12.63 billion. Noninterest income of $9.35 billion also missed the $9.59 billion estimate.

Those misses matter because a small EPS beat can come from expense control, provisions, taxes or share count rather than stronger core revenue. Wells did produce a 13.8% return on equity and a 16.3% return on tangible common equity, evidence that the bank is earning more effectively on its capital.

Balance-sheet growth and capital returns

Average loans increased 11% to $1.03 trillion, average deposits rose 11% to $1.48 trillion and client assets reached $2.74 trillion, also up 11%. Wells repurchased $2.5 billion of stock, or 28.6 million shares. Its common equity tier 1 ratio was 10.0%, slightly below the 10.1% estimate cited by the source.

Management said its consumer and business customers remained in good condition despite mixed sentiment. That assessment should be tested against future credit losses, deposit costs and loan growth rather than taken as a conclusion.

The quarter supports a measured improvement story, especially in wealth management and capital returns. The next test is whether net interest income stabilizes while the bank holds its stronger returns. Without that revenue support, further EPS gains would depend too heavily on operating efficiency and balance-sheet choices.
