Sky Protocol says its Peg Stability Module held more than $4.4 billion of aggregate stablecoin liquidity on October 9. The figure supports large on-chain conversions between USDS and USDC, but it should not be read as $4.4 billion of cash immediately available to every USDS holder through a bank.
The PSM solves one step of the exit
A Peg Stability Module is a smart contract that exchanges one stablecoin for another at a fixed rate using liquidity already held by the protocol. Sky says the PSM converts USDS and USDC one-for-one with no protocol fee or slippage on the direct route. By October 6, Uniswap routing connected to that system had processed about $1.6 billion of cumulative USDC-USDS volume.
Aggregate liquidity and available USDC inventory answer a narrower question than token supply. Borrowing USDS against collateral, migrating DAI into USDS or moving tokens among holders can change circulation without representing an equal inflow of new dollars from banks. Cumulative volume also measures turnover, not fresh capital.
Bank redemption is a separate transaction
A USDS holder who wants dollars first needs a route into USDC. Direct redemption of USDC with Circle then requires an eligible Circle Mint account, possession of the tokens and compliance with account and legal conditions. Circle's European account agreement also requires a verified linked bank account and warns that settlement can be delayed by banks or payment partners.
That separation creates several risks. The PSM can have ample aggregate liquidity while a specific route has less USDC available. A holder can also complete the on-chain conversion but remain unable to redeem directly with Circle because of jurisdiction, account eligibility or compliance restrictions.
What the disclosure does establish
The $4.4 billion figure is meaningful evidence that Sky has built a deep conversion mechanism. It reduces reliance on finding another trader at the moment of a swap and can help USDS hold its target price. It does not convert USDS into a bank account, guarantee immediate fiat settlement or prove that every token entered circulation through a new dollar deposit.
Investors and large holders should monitor route-level USDC inventory, conversion limits, Circle eligibility and bank settlement times. Those measures, rather than total token supply alone, determine how smoothly a large USDS position can become cash.
