Shopify Is Growing Fast, but the Stock Still Prices In a Lot

Is It Too Late To Buy Shopify Stock?

Shopify's revenue, GMV and margins support the recent rally, but valuation remains far above the broader market. The next earnings report must confirm low-thirties growth and durable cash conversion.

Shopify gained 34.3% over the three months covered by the source, far ahead of the S&P 500's 2.8% rise. The business also delivered strong growth. The tension for investors is that the share price already assumes much of that strength will continue.

The premium is broad, not limited to one metric

The source calculated Shopify at 16.7 times trailing sales, 114.8 times trailing earnings and 93.1 times operating cash flow. The comparable S&P 500 figures were 3.1 times sales, 21.9 times earnings and 14.7 times operating cash flow.

These ratios use different denominators, but they point in the same direction: investors pay far more for each dollar of Shopify's current revenue, profit and cash flow than for the broad market. A premium can be rational when growth and margins are superior. It also raises the cost of any disappointment.

The company is delivering the growth the multiple requires

Shopify reported second-quarter 2026 revenue growth of 34%, or 33% in constant currency. Gross merchandise volume increased by more than 30%, and the company produced an 18% free-cash-flow margin. Management guided third-quarter revenue to grow at a low-thirties rate and free-cash-flow margin to land in the high teens to low twenties.

Payments are an important part of the mechanism. As more merchant volume runs through Shopify's payment services, the company captures more revenue from activity on its platform. The source reported that Shopify Payments handled 68% of merchant gross merchandise volume in the second quarter, up three percentage points from a year earlier.

What the valuation needs next

The November 3 report should answer two questions. First, did revenue remain in the low-thirties growth range? Second, did Shopify convert that growth into a free-cash-flow margin near or above 20%?

Revenue growth below management's range would challenge the assumption that the recent pace can persist. Strong cash conversion could offset some of that concern because it would show that growth is producing cash rather than requiring proportionate spending.

Investors should also distinguish a single quarter from a durable model. Shopify's results can move with consumer spending, merchant health, payments mix, currency and operating investment. The source noted that the shares have reacted sharply in both directions around recent earnings.

How to frame the decision

The stock is not cheap simply because it trades below its historical peak sales multiple. The relevant comparison is the future cash flow investors can reasonably expect, not the highest multiple buyers once accepted.

BTI sees a high-quality growth company paired with a valuation that leaves little room for slower execution. A new buyer is effectively betting that low-thirties revenue growth and strong cash conversion will last long enough for earnings to catch up with the price.
