onsemi's Recovery Is Becoming Visible in Cash Flow

ON Could Be One of the Semiconductor Sector’s Biggest Comeback Stories

onsemi's second-quarter revenue returned to growth and free cash flow quadrupled, but the durability of the recovery still depends on automotive demand, margin expansion and execution on its planned Synaptics acquisition.

onsemi's second-quarter results provided clearer evidence that the chipmaker is moving out of its downturn. Revenue rose 9% from a year earlier to $1.604 billion, while free cash flow reached $425.4 million, roughly four times the prior-year level.

The improvement matters because onsemi entered 2026 with weak automotive and industrial demand weighing on factory utilization and margins. A recovery thesis needs more than a rising share price or a distant addressable-market estimate. It needs better revenue, cash generation and operating leverage, and the latest quarter delivered progress on all three.

Gross margin was 38.4% under GAAP and 39.3% on a non-GAAP basis. Non-GAAP operating margin reached 20.8%, and non-GAAP diluted earnings per share was $0.74. Management said revenue, gross margin and EPS all finished above the midpoint of guidance.

AI power products add a second growth engine

Automotive and industrial markets remain important, but management now describes AI data centers as onsemi's fastest-growing business and expects that revenue to more than double in 2026. The company has expanded its role in Nvidia's MGX ecosystem and announced platform wins with Great Wall, a Chinese cloud-infrastructure power supplier.

Those wins are relevant because AI servers require power conversion at several stages, creating demand for silicon carbide, silicon MOSFETs, controllers and gallium nitride products. onsemi's opportunity is not tied only to the number of accelerators shipped. It also depends on how much power each rack consumes and how efficiently that power is delivered.

Cash conversion is the strongest proof point. Free cash flow margin increased from about 7% to 27% year over year, according to the company. onsemi repurchased $332 million of stock during the quarter, bringing year-to-date shareholder returns to about 105% of free cash flow. That level of distribution is supportive for shareholders, but it should be assessed alongside acquisition financing and cyclical capital needs.

What could interrupt the comeback

The planned acquisition of Synaptics could broaden onsemi's connected-compute capabilities, but integration and financing add execution risk. Automotive exposure also remains a two-sided factor: a recovery would lift utilization, while another demand slowdown could delay margin improvement.

The earlier source attached price targets and high-confidence projections to the recovery. Those forecasts are not necessary to make the investment case and are too sensitive to the earnings base and cycle. The more defensible conclusion is narrower: onsemi has returned to year-over-year growth, cash generation has improved sharply, and AI power products are becoming more important.

The next earnings report should show whether those gains persist. Revenue mix, factory utilization, gross margin and free cash flow will reveal whether the quarter marked the start of a durable recovery or only an early cyclical bounce.
