NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) is testing whether it can expand beyond a concentrated customer base without sacrificing growth. CNBC reported that Nvidia relies heavily on hyperscalers Amazon, Google and Microsoft, alongside major buyers Meta and SpaceX. In May, it began separating data-center revenue into hyperscalers and ACIE—AI clouds, industrial and enterprise customers. In the first quarter, hyperscalers generated $37.9 billion and ACIE produced $37.5 billion. ACIE grew 31%, outpacing hyperscalers. CEO Jensen Huang has called hyperscalers the “easiest go-to-market” because there are only five or six, compared with roughly 250,000 companies in Nvidia’s broader target market. Later results strengthened the diversification case. Data Center revenue reached $89 billion, exceeding the $85.8 billion forecast. CFO Colette Kress said hyperscale revenue more than doubled, while ACIE revenue surged 138%. The results indicate that Nvidia’s smaller, more diversified customer base can grow faster than its concentrated core. Hyperscalers continue buying GPUs in bulk despite capital spending squeezing free cash flow, showing that AI infrastructure remains a priority. However, the concentration risk remains substantial. Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Meta and SpaceX are developing custom chips to reduce reliance on Nvidia, creating a long-term competitive threat. Financial pressure is another risk. If hyperscalers slow investment because AI spending continues eroding free cash flow, Nvidia’s largest revenue source could be exposed even as ACIE expands. Nvidia can reduce that risk by reaching smaller customers while technology giants continue investing, but in-house chips or abrupt budget cuts could trigger sharp demand declines.
