GM says it will introduce eyes-off highway driving on the Cadillac Escalade IQ in 2028, using lidar, radar and cameras. The goal is clear, but regulatory approval and validated deployment remain ahead.
General Motors says it remains on track to introduce eyes-off highway driving on the Cadillac Escalade IQ in 2028.
Eyes-off is a substantial step beyond today's hands-free assistance. GM says the vehicle will be designed to let occupants read or handle messages while the system controls the drive within an approved operating domain. Turquoise lighting will indicate when the feature is active.
The company plans to combine lidar, radar and cameras rather than depend on a vision-only system. Sensor fusion will create the perception layer, while real-world driving data and simulation will train and test the decision system. GM is also incorporating technology and expertise from Cruise after ending its standalone robotaxi strategy.
A target, not a deployed capability
The 2028 date is a development goal. GM still has to validate the system, demonstrate safe behavior in rare conditions and secure the necessary approvals. Availability may vary by state, road and weather, and the final responsibility rules will depend on how the system is classified.
GM says Super Cruise has accumulated more than 700 million hands-free miles across 23 vehicle models. That operating history supports the company's ability to scale driver assistance, but it does not by itself validate eyes-off operation, where the driver is not expected to continuously supervise the road.
The system will run on GM's next-generation centralized computing platform. The same architecture is intended to support conversational AI and faster over-the-air software updates, making software a more persistent part of the vehicle relationship.
For investors, successful delivery could help GM differentiate premium vehicles and support recurring software revenue. The company has not disclosed a price, expected adoption rate or revenue contribution for eyes-off driving, so the financial case remains unquantified.
The milestones that matter are regulatory clearance, demonstrated safety performance, named launch markets and commercial pricing. Until those are available, the 2028 Escalade IQ plan is credible evidence of direction, not proof that the capability is ready for customers.
