Fastly’s Growth Supports the Upgrade, but Profitability Matters

FSLY Rockets Nearly 16%: Oppenheimer Upgrades Stock As Analyst Sees Agentic AI Driving Sustained Growth

Fastly’s revenue and security growth improved enough to support a bullish analyst upgrade. The next test is whether larger contracts convert into durable margins, cash flow and lower execution risk.

Fastly shares surged after Oppenheimer upgraded the stock and set a $35 target. The analyst action amplified the move, but Fastly's own second-quarter results provide the more durable evidence: revenue rose 23% to $183.3 million and security revenue rose 43% to $41.7 million.

The growth base is improving

Fastly guided to third-quarter revenue of $184 million to $190 million. At the midpoint, that would extend growth from the second-quarter base. Security is important because it can deepen customer relationships and diversify Fastly beyond content delivery.

The reported thesis also emphasizes larger contract values and demand from agentic AI applications. That is plausible because automated software can generate more traffic and security needs, but Fastly has not disclosed an AI-specific revenue total. Investors should separate a use-case narrative from measured revenue.

Growth must translate into economics

Revenue acceleration matters only if gross margin, operating leverage and cash flow improve with it. Network businesses carry fixed infrastructure costs, so higher utilization can expand margins. The same cost base can hurt quickly if traffic growth slows or pricing becomes more competitive.

Fastly also competes with larger delivery and security platforms. Customers can use multiple providers, which reduces dependence on one vendor but increases price pressure. Winning larger contracts is valuable only if renewal rates, usage and margins support the headline amount.

The balance between growth and dilution also matters greatly. Stock-based compensation can preserve cash while reducing each shareholder's claim on future earnings. Investors should therefore compare revenue growth with free cash flow per share and dilution, not only with adjusted operating metrics.

What investors should watch

Fastly is scheduled to report again on November 4, 2026. The key figures are revenue versus the $184 million to $190 million range, security growth, gross margin, operating cash flow and remaining performance obligations. Management should also quantify how new products convert pilots into paid production usage.

BTI's bottom line

The upgrade rests on a genuine improvement in Fastly's reported growth, not only an AI label. The next stage of the thesis requires evidence that bigger contracts and security adoption create sustainable profit and cash flow.
