Fastly shares surged after Oppenheimer upgraded the stock to outperform and set a $35 target. A target price reflects an analyst's assumptions, not a company promise. Fastly's second-quarter results provide the firmer basis for evaluating whether the rerating can last.
Growth accelerated across the platform
Fastly reported revenue of $183.3 million, up 23% from a year earlier. Security revenue reached $41.7 million, up 43%, while trailing net retention rose to 117%. Net retention above 100% means existing customers, in aggregate, spent more after expansions and churn.
The mix matters because security can deepen customer relationships and reduce reliance on basic content delivery. The company also reported a 63.3% gross margin. Those figures support the upgrade's claim that Fastly's operating trajectory has improved.
Cash flow and concentration temper the case
Fastly generated $3.6 million of free cash flow in the quarter, down from $10.9 million a year earlier despite higher revenue. Its ten largest customers accounted for 37% of revenue, compared with 31% a year earlier. Large customers can improve scale, but greater concentration raises the damage if one customer reduces traffic or negotiates harder on price. Stock-based compensation and capital spending also matter because adjusted profitability can improve before each shareholder's economic claim or cash generation does.
An AI-traffic narrative may increase demand for delivery, compute and security services, but Fastly has not disclosed a separate AI revenue line. Investors should not treat industry traffic growth as automatically captured revenue. The competitive response from Cloudflare, Akamai and hyperscale platforms also matters. Pricing discipline will show whether traffic growth brings attractive gross profit or only more infrastructure load.
What investors should watch
Fastly is scheduled to report third-quarter results on November 4, 2026. Watch revenue growth, security mix, gross margin, free cash flow and customer concentration. Remaining performance obligations and net retention should show whether larger contracts are durable rather than one-time wins. A stable or rising margin would make that growth more valuable.
BTI's bottom line
The upgrade follows measurable operating improvement, not only an AI label. The remaining hurdle is converting faster growth into recurring cash flow without taking excessive customer-concentration or pricing risk.
