SOXX Beat SMH Recently, but Fund Structure Matters More Than One Year

Forget SMH: BlackRock’s Chip Fund Beat It by 22.43 Points Over the Past Year

SOXX outperformed SMH over the past year, while SMH retained a stronger long-term record and different concentration profile.

The iShares Semiconductor ETF outperformed the VanEck Semiconductor ETF over the year covered by the source article, but that result does not make SOXX automatically superior. The article reported a 111.56% one-year gain for SOXX versus 89.13% for SMH, a difference of 22.43 percentage points.

The comparison changed over longer periods. The source said SMH led materially over five and ten years. That reversal shows how index construction and individual-stock weights can dominate sector-ETF results. Both funds own semiconductor companies, but they follow different benchmarks, rebalance under different rules and place different limits on their largest constituents.

Concentration is the main investor issue. The article cited an older SMH filing in which Nvidia represented 17.54% of assets. A large position can boost returns when the holding rises and amplify losses when earnings or guidance disappoint. SOXX also remains a concentrated industry fund rather than a diversified technology portfolio. BlackRock's official page says the fund provides exposure across the semiconductor value chain and publishes current holdings and costs.

Investors should use sponsor data from the same date when comparing weights, expense ratios and performance. They should also consider tax consequences before selling a large winner in a taxable account. Directing new contributions to a second fund may change exposure without immediately realizing gains.

The central conclusion is that recent performance is evidence of a weighting advantage during one market regime. The better fund depends on the investor's desired concentration, benchmark rules, holding period and tolerance for a cyclical industry.
