Facebook Lets Users Tell Its Algorithm What They Want to See

Facebook is giving users more control over their algorithm

Meta's new Facebook controls let people describe preferred topics in natural language and update Feed and Reels recommendations in real time, adding a direct signal to automated ranking.

Meta is giving Facebook users a more direct way to influence what appears in Feed and Reels. The new feature, called Your algorithm, lets people add and manage topics in natural language instead of relying only on behavioral signals such as clicks, watch time and follows.

Users can reach the tool through the three-dot menu on a post. The same menu now includes clearer Interested and Not interested actions, and Facebook may ask follow-up questions about why a post was useful or unwanted. Meta says recommendation changes can appear in real time.

A new input, not a new feed

The feature does not replace Facebook's ranking systems. It adds explicit preferences to the large set of signals those systems already use. That distinction matters because users may gain more influence without receiving complete control over every item in the feed.

Meta introduced a related version on Instagram before extending the concept to Facebook. Threads also offers Dear Algo, which lets users describe what they want to see. The rollout shows Meta standardizing conversational controls across its social products as recommendation systems become more dependent on artificial intelligence.

The business consequence is engagement

More relevant recommendations can increase time spent and ad opportunities, while better controls may reduce frustration with unwanted content. Meta has previously said that AI recommendation improvements increased Facebook Reels watch time, which explains why even a product feature aimed at user control can matter financially.

The risk is that the feature creates an expectation of precision the system cannot always meet. Natural-language requests can be ambiguous, and a preference expressed today may conflict with behavior tomorrow. Meta will also need to show that safety and integrity systems continue to constrain recommendations even when a user requests more of a topic.

No separate revenue forecast is justified from this launch. The measurable signals are adoption, repeated use of the controls, changes in hides or skips, and any improvement in time spent or ad conversion. If users actively tune the system and engagement improves without weakening safety, Your algorithm could strengthen Facebook's recommendation loop. If few people use it, the launch will remain a transparency feature rather than a meaningful business catalyst.
