IGV's 41% Rebound Leaves Software Investors With a Valuation Test

Everyone Declared Software Dead in April. This ETF Is Up 41% Since Then.

Software shares rebounded sharply from April lows, but IGV remained weaker over longer periods. The next earnings cycle must show that revenue retention and AI monetization justify the rerating.

The iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF rose 41.46% from April 13 through October 12, 2026, according to the source analysis. That easily beat QQQ and SPY over the same six-month window, reversing the narrative that AI would destroy established software businesses.

The longer record is less decisive. The same analysis put IGV down 0.68% over one year and up only 5.34% year to date. A strong rebound from a depressed starting point is not the same as a durable earnings acceleration.

What changed

Investors grew less convinced that AI agents would immediately displace the software platforms already embedded in corporate workflows. Those platforms hold data, permissions and business rules that are costly to replace. Vendors also began showing more concrete AI products and usage.

The fund's composition matters. IGV holds a diversified software basket, but its largest companies still have substantial influence. BlackRock's official page showed CrowdStrike at 7.17% in a September 2026 snapshot. The fund also charges an expense ratio around 0.38%, which is material for a sector allocation held over many years.

Price moved faster than fundamentals

A 41% move in six months probably includes valuation expansion as well as improving expectations. Software profits rarely accelerate at the same pace as a sector ETF. That creates a simple risk: one weak guidance cycle can compress multiples even if the businesses remain healthy.

The next earnings season should be judged by net revenue retention, contract growth, customer seats and measurable AI revenue. Investors should distinguish usage metrics from paid adoption and avoid assuming every AI announcement protects pricing power.

IGV offers a cleaner way to own the software theme than selecting one company, but it does not eliminate valuation risk. The rebound becomes more durable if recurring revenue and cash flow catch up with the price. Without that confirmation, the move remains partly a rerating from April's pessimism.
