Comcast's Wireless Growth Is Real, but Free Lines Must Start Paying

The One Number Comcast Stock Investors Should Watch

Comcast added a record 448,000 wireless lines in the second quarter and reached 10.2 million total lines. The next test is whether promotional customers convert to paid service as broadband customers and revenue per user decline.

Comcast's fastest customer growth is no longer coming from the cable business that built the company. In the second quarter of 2026, it added a record 448,000 domestic wireless lines, taking the total to 10.2 million. That progress contrasts with a loss of 167,000 residential broadband customers.

Wireless is strategically useful because Comcast can bundle mobile service with home internet, deepen customer relationships and use its Wi-Fi network to reduce the amount of traffic carried on wholesale cellular capacity. Yet the headline addition needs context. Roughly half of residential postpaid phone connections in the quarter came from customers taking a free line.

The conversion test

Management expects a significant majority of customers to become paying users when promotions expire. That conversion is essential. A free line can help retain a broadband household, but it does not create the same revenue or margin as a fully paid mobile subscription.

Comcast's domestic wireless revenue rose 14% to about $1.01 billion in the quarter, according to the company's results. Wireless penetration remains low at about 7% of addressable lines in Comcast's footprint, leaving room to grow. The opportunity is genuine, but the quality of that growth depends on pricing, churn and the cost of serving each line.

Broadband pressure makes the issue more urgent. Revenue per broadband customer fell 3.8% as Comcast held back price increases, simplified plans and used wireless promotions. Fiber and fixed-wireless competitors remain aggressive. The company is effectively accepting near-term pressure in its core business to build a converged broadband-and-mobile relationship.

What the next report must show

The most useful disclosure would be the share of promotional lines that convert to paid service, along with mobile revenue per line and customer retention. Continued line growth without revenue conversion would weaken the case that wireless can offset cable erosion.

Investors also face a temporary reduction in capital returns. Comcast paused share repurchases on July 1 while preparing a corporate separation. That removes one support for per-share results as management executes its operating transition.

At a high level, Comcast has demonstrated demand for its mobile offer. It has not yet proved that record gross additions will become a durable profit engine. The next earnings report should show whether free lines are graduating into paying relationships fast enough to justify the revenue Comcast is giving up today.
