Bank of America upgraded Salesforce to buy from sell and raised its price target to $285 from $160, according to CNBC. The reversal matters because it challenges the view that generative AI will quickly replace established software platforms. The stronger argument is not that Salesforce is immune to disruption, but that AI may increase the value of the data, permissions and workflows already inside its platform.
Why replacement is harder than it appears
Large enterprises use Salesforce to hold customer data, business rules, compliance controls and automated processes. Rebuilding those systems with newly generated applications would create migration, security and operational risks. That makes replacement slower and more expensive than producing a simple interface with AI tools.
The counterargument remains important. If employees spend more time inside general-purpose assistants, the traditional application interface may become less visible. Salesforce must therefore make its data and actions available inside the tools customers choose, while preserving governance and charging for the value it provides.
Claudeforce is part of that response
Salesforce and Anthropic announced Claudeforce in August 2026. The partnership is designed to make Salesforce data, workflows, business logic and controls available to Claude-powered agentic experiences. An AI agent is software that can complete multi-step tasks, not merely answer a question. The commercial opportunity is to charge for work performed across Salesforce applications even when the user begins inside another interface.
Official results show early traction. Salesforce reported fiscal second-quarter 2027 revenue of $11.35 billion, up from $10.24 billion a year earlier. Subscription and support revenue reached $10.82 billion. Agentforce and Data 360 annual recurring revenue exceeded $2.9 billion, including acquired Informatica cloud revenue, while Agentforce ARR was $800 million and grew 169% year over year.
What the upgrade does not prove
A price-target increase is an analyst opinion, not evidence that growth has already reaccelerated. Salesforce still needs to show that AI products add spending rather than replace existing seats or get bundled into contracts without sufficient incremental revenue. The inclusion of Informatica also makes the combined ARR figure less comparable with Salesforce's organic history.
Investors should watch current remaining performance obligations, Agentforce ARR, net new order value and operating margins. BTI's conclusion is that Salesforce has a credible defense against rapid AI displacement, but the bull case requires measurable expansion in customer spending and sustained revenue growth.
