AeroVironment Backlog Supports Demand, but Controls Still Carry a Discount

AeroVironment Is Now Down 43% This Year. Is It Time to Sell This Dropping Drone Stock?

AVAV enters fiscal 2027 with record backlog and strong revenue guidance, yet an accounting restatement and acquisition integration keep execution risk elevated.

AeroVironment's share decline cannot be explained by weak demand alone. The company ended fiscal 2026 with funded backlog of about $1.2 billion, up from roughly $726.6 million, and entered fiscal 2027 with revenue guidance of $2.125 billion to $2.225 billion. That operating pipeline conflicts with a stock that the source report described as down 43% for the year. The missing piece is confidence in execution and financial controls.

Demand remains visible

AeroVironment's fiscal 2027 outlook called for adjusted EBITDA of $305 million to $325 million and non-GAAP EPS of $3.02 to $3.34. Its first-quarter update reported record revenue and backlog, reiterated the revenue and EBITDA ranges, and updated expected net income to $10 million to $27 million. Those figures suggest government and defense customers continue ordering unmanned systems and related technology.

The accounting issue matters because growth is complex

The source report described an $89 million goodwill-calculation error tied to the space unit, a restatement and subsequent securities litigation. Goodwill is non-cash, but an error can still reveal weaknesses in valuation processes, integration and review controls. That is especially relevant for a company expanding through acquisitions, where investors must trust purchase accounting, segment reporting and the bridge between adjusted and GAAP earnings.

Peer declines complicate the diagnosis. Kratos and Red Cat also fell sharply, suggesting that smaller defense-technology companies were repriced as a group. AeroVironment therefore carries both a sector discount and a company-specific controls discount. Strong backlog can offset the first if contracts convert on schedule; it does not automatically remove the second.

What would rebuild confidence

Investors should test backlog quality through revenue conversion, program timing and cash generation. A growing backlog is most valuable when it turns into sales without margin erosion or excessive working-capital needs. They should also examine remediation disclosures, audit conclusions and acquisition-integration milestones rather than treating a restatement as closed merely because it involved goodwill.

The fiscal 2027 guide offers a measurable framework. Revenue within the stated range, EBITDA conversion and progress toward positive GAAP earnings would support the view that the selloff overshot operating risk. Guidance cuts, delayed programs or further control findings would reinforce the discount.

AeroVironment has not lost its demand engine, but the stock now asks investors to underwrite execution twice: once in delivering a much larger backlog and again in demonstrating that the financial systems around its expanded business can be trusted.
