Five High-Flying ETFs Reveal Concentration and Leverage Risk

5 Surging ETFs Up More than 50% in 2026

ARKG, EWY, EWT, SMH and TQQQ surged in 2026, but their gains came with concentrated holdings, cyclical exposure or daily leverage.

Five exchange-traded funds rose more than 50% in 2026 according to TIKR: ARKG, EWY, EWT, SMH and TQQQ. Their performance was not the product of broad diversification. It came from concentrated exposure to a few powerful themes, especially semiconductors, Asian hardware supply chains and leveraged technology.

The article reported that ARKG was driven heavily by two biotechnology holdings, while EWY and EWT depended on large positions in Korean and Taiwanese chipmakers. SMH concentrated its portfolio in a relatively small group of semiconductor companies. TQQQ added another layer of risk by targeting three times the Nasdaq-100's daily return.

Daily leverage is especially important. A leveraged fund resets each session, so its long-term result is path-dependent and can suffer volatility drag. A 10% decline followed by a 10% gain does not restore the original value, and the effect is magnified at three times daily exposure. TQQQ therefore is not simply QQQ with a fixed threefold long-term return.

The same concentration that produced exceptional gains can reverse when memory pricing, AI capital spending, regulation or investor risk appetite changes. Country ETFs can also carry currency, political and single-industry exposure that is easy to miss.

Investors comparing these funds should inspect current holdings, top-ten concentration, index methodology, expense ratios and rebalancing rules. Past-year performance is useful evidence about what drove returns, but it is not a forecast. The stronger the recent gain, the more important it becomes to identify whether earnings, valuation expansion or leverage produced it.
